Payne Family Collection

Description

Collection holds 85 photographs, 29 pages of text, and 5 artworks pertaining to the Payne family and life on Saturna Island. Gerald Payne and his family were some of the first European settlers on Saturna Island, first arriving in 1898. Over time he attracted members of his extended family to the island, so that the Paynes were involved in everything from farming the land to building the first church.

Major themes within the collection include: Payne family photos, various islanders, fishing activities, memoirs, and newspaper clippings.

We are grateful to Sonia Furstenau, Jan Carroll, and Ruth Wiren for contributing these items to the Saturna Heritage Centre from 2011 to 2014.

In 2015, 11 additional items were added to the Payne collection. Thank-you to Ruth Wiren for collecting these images and lending them to the Saturna Island Heritage Archive.
